Commonly Asked Questions
How long is a typical counseling session?
Counseling sessions last 55 minutes, which must also account for scheduling at the end of the session.
What should I expect during my first counseling session?
The initial session of counseling serves as an opportunity to establish a rapport with the client. This involves exploring the client’s background, family history, presenting symptoms, and therapeutic goals. The most effective predictor of therapeutic success is the establishment of a strong and collaborative therapeutic alliance. While it may be intimidating to open up during the initial sessions, the focus will be on building trust, gaining a deeper understanding of the client, and identifying the most appropriate strategies to support their therapeutic objectives.
Will the things I say in session remain private?
Everything that is talked about in session will remain private and confidential. The only limits to confidentiality are if the client is a danger to themselves or others, or if abuse is suspected.
How often will I need counseling?
Counseling sessions are personalized to each client. The frequency of sessions are determined by both the counselor and the client, considering symptoms, treatment goals, and progress over time. Initially, sessions may be more frequent, but they may become less so over time. Clients are not obligated to commit to a specific frequency of meeting.
How do I know if counseling will work for me?
Counseling isn’t about a “quick fix”—it’s about creating a safe space where you can explore what’s weighing on you, gain clarity, and develop tools that actually fit your life. For many people, just having someone truly listen without judgment is the first step toward healing.
How much does a counseling cost?
Individual counseling sessions cost $135.00 per session and couples counseling sessions cost $165.00 per session. All session fees are due at the time of service. Clients may submit their session invoice to their insurance company for reimbursement. Please note I cannot guarantee what fees your insurance company will and will not cover.
Is it normal to feel nervous about starting counseling?
Yes — it’s completely normal to feel nervous before starting therapy. Many people experience a mix of anticipation and anxiety when reaching out for help. You might wonder what to expect, whether you’ll “open up” easily, or if counseling will really help. These feelings don’t mean you’re not ready — they’re a sign that you’re stepping into something new and meaningful.
What do I talk about in counseling?
You can bring anything that feels important to you. Some people start with a specific struggle, while others just know they want life to feel better but aren’t sure where to begin. There’s no “wrong” topic in counseling. If it matters to you, it matters to me.
How should I prepare for my first session?
You don’t need to do anything special to prepare — just showing up is already a big step! If you’d like, you can spend a little time reflecting beforehand or bring a notebook to jot down insights and tools you find helpful along the way.
Do I need to be a Christian to work with you?
Absolutely not. While I do offer Christian counseling for those who desire it, it is never a requirement to become a client. I value working with people from many different kinds of people. My only request before beginning counseling is that you come with a willingness to heal, learn, and grow. My hope is that through therapy, you’ll develop the tools and confidence you need to move forward and reach your personal goals.
